The 2nd annual 24 Hours of Sunlight wound down on Sunday morning, in huge success. With over 170 competing racers making up 58 teams, the numbers almost doubled from last year. This year’s competitors came from all over to compete in the race, representing two countries and seven states, not to mention a new world record was set.
Mike Schnieter, of Glenwood Springs, set the new world record for most human powered vertical feet snowboarded in 24 Hours. With 24 completed laps under his belt, he reached 36,048 vertical feet, beating the record set last year by almost 16,000 feet.
Greg Hill and Polly Samuels-McLean, both world record holders from the 2006 24 Hours of Sunlight, also came to the race with their games faces on. Greg completed the same number of laps (32) as his record held from last year - no small feat; however, fell short of vertical feet due to the slightly shorter course (48,064' compared to 49,760' from last year). Polly won the women's solo division again, but also did not beat her record from last year.
This year’s course was comprised of a separate run for ascending and descending, “quite an improvement from last year’s course where competitors were going up and down the same run,” says Mike Marolt, “it was very well organized.”
Men’s Senior Team, Flippin’ Sweet Moves, won the event with 58,578 vertical feet and 39 completed laps. While the fastest men’s time was 29 minutes 57 seconds by Brian Harder of You Can Sleep When You’re Dead, and fastest woman’s time was 38 minutes 25 seconds by Heidi Vosbeck of Team Supersonic Lunar Lovers.
The team to win the Duo Pro/Expert division, You Can Sleep When You're Dead is a Male/Female duo, Brian Harder and Dina Mishev from Jackson, WY. They completed a combined 33 laps for a total of 49,566' elevation gain and came in 5th overall!
